Gary-Surman
Director of Academics
Gary Surman
Gary first joined A-List just a few years after its founding in New York City. Over the past 13 years with A-List, he has helped hundreds of A-List students achieve their dream scores, analyzed tests, written curriculum, taught in the classroom, and trained teachers. During this time, he gained experience working with students of differing background and ability, from students who find the timing and academic rigors of standardized tests exceedingly challenging to extremely high-scoring students aiming to push their scores ever closer to perfection. Gary’s background and speciality lies in Maths and Physics, and he brings this perspective while helping students build a stronger understanding of English language and arts.

Although most tuition that his students have received was aimed primarily at attaining strong testing scores, Gary’s goal has always been to push his students to gain both logic and flexibility in thought and to help them become more diligent and organised in their working. He offers support while holding them to a high standard and encouraging them take independent ownership over their education.

Gary first discovered his passion for teaching as a student mentor and Teaching Assistant whilst an undergrad at SUNY Geneseo. While pursuing his double-major of Mathematics and Physics, Gary became involved in undergraduate physics research before being selected to conduct particle & nuclear physics research at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. He pursued graduate studies in Mathematics at the University  of Colorado, from which he graduated with honours. Having discovered his true passion lay in teaching, Gary moved back to his home state of New York to pursue a career in education, at which point he found a home at A-List Education. Gary is known at A-List not only for his unparalleled math skills but also for his encyclopaedic knowledge of shark species and the foes of Godzilla.
