UChicago introduces Summer Student Early Notification (SSEN): Everything you need to know

Getting into an outstanding university like the University of Chicago is a long and difficult process, with multiple rounds of applications, essays, and nervous waiting periods. However, some universities now offer early notification options, allowing some students to receive their admissions decisions before the normal schedule.

The University of Chicago’s admissions process is known for its flexibility, offering various options such as Early Action, Early Decision, and Regular Decision. They have recently introduced a new option called the Summer Student Early Notification (SSEN): an innovative strategy designed to benefit high school students who have shown commitment to UChicago by completing a Pre-College Summer Session Program.

Why SSEN?

The SSEN was created to fast-track the admissions process for dedicated students, acknowledging their sustained interest in, and involvement with, the University of Chicago. By participating in a UChicago Pre-College Summer Session, students can show their enthusiasm for UChicago and their readiness for college-level study. The SSEN then aims to reward this commitment by providing an expedited admissions decision - kind of like a loyalty program!

How it works

The SSEN is pretty straightforward. Only students who participate in and complete a UChicago Pre-College Summer Session during their high school years are eligible. After completing the summer session, students can submit an SSEN application in the autumn of their senior year of high school. Students will receive a binding decision within three weeks.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the SSEN program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Complete a UChicago Pre-College Summer Session during high school.
  • Demonstrate strong academic ability during high school.
  • Show a genuine interest in attending the University of Chicago in their application.

Who should apply for SSEN?

The SSEN program is perfect for students who:

  • Have a strong interest in attending the University of Chicago;
  • Have completed a UChicago Pre-College Summer Session;
  • And are looking for a sped-up admissions decision to reduce the stress and uncertainty of the college application process.

Benefits of SSEN

Fast-track a student's undergraduate application

As mentioned, one of the main benefits of the SSEN program is that it fast-tracks a student's undergraduate application.

You would know whether you're admitted into UChicago before the Early Decision deadline for almost every other school in the US - which allows you to plan ahead with more confidence.

Give students an edge in the competitive admissions process

College admissions are highly competitive, so you should make the most of any advantages you can get. By participating in a UChicago Pre-College Summer Session and applying through the SSEN program, you can demonstrate your dedication to the university and preparedness, potentially giving you an edge over other applicants.

It’s important to note that UChicago doesn’t explicitly say that applying early—through a program like the SSEN, for instance—boosts your chances of getting in. However, admissions statistics show that early rounds of applications have higher acceptance rates than regular rounds, which makes sense when you consider the factors below.

Increase yield rate and prestige for the university

For the University of Chicago, the SSEN helps increase the yield rate: that is, the percentage of accepted students who choose to enrol. A higher yield can boost the university's reputation and prestige and attract even better students in the future. In addition, by firming up the number of incoming students earlier, UChicago can plan how to use its resources better. It’s a win-win situation!

Promote summer programs

SSEN also highlights the value of UChicago's summer programs. These programs offer high school students a taste of life at UChicago, potentially attracting them as full-time students.

Does applying through SSEN have any drawbacks?

While there are many advantages to the SSEN process, it's essential to consider the potential drawbacks as well.

Firstly, since you'll only be in your senior year for a couple weeks when the deadline comes, you won't be able to include your fall grades - this won't be ideal for those who plan to boost their academic profile through final year's performance.

Additionally, you will rely on teacher recommendations from your summer session application, instead of submitted new ones. This may affect your application if you feel the recommendations you had have been lacking.

Lastly but most importantly, the hefty cost of UChicago Summer Sessions can be a significant barrier for many families. This is where the SSEN program, comes into play - you'll be paying not just for a summer experience but also the potential for a higher chance of getting into UChicago.

Application process

  • Create an account on the University of Chicago's website: Remember to select "SSEN" as your application plan during the setup process.
  • Fill in the application form: You can either use the Common App or the Coalition application platform. Carefully complete every section to give admissions officers clear insights on your academic achievements, your background, values, and who you are outside of the classroom.
  • Sign the Student Early Decision Agreement: Submit the Student Early Decision Agreement in the “Forms” section of your UChicago account for the SSEN program, rather than the Common App or Apply Coalition portals.
  • Submit your application: Bear in mind you're only able to submit a SSEN application between September 1 and October 15.

Advice for students applying to SSEN

Choose the right summer program

It might sound obvious, but be sure to select a summer program that truly fits your interests and academic goals. This will not only make the experience more enjoyable but will also allow you to show real passion in your SSEN application. UChicago wants to see that you are genuinely excited about the idea of studying your chosen subject for three or more years.

Develop connections with faculty members

During your summer session, try to build positive relationships with faculty members, as many of them are likely to be in the admissions committee. Their recommendations can help strengthen your SSEN application. You can do this by engaging in class discussions and by seeking out advice and guidance. You want to show UChicago that you are an active, curious and positive person!

Highlight your summer program experience in your application

Make sure to highlight your experiences and accomplishments from the UChicago Pre-College Summer Session in your SSEN application. Discuss specific projects, research, or coursework that you were involved in, what you gained from them, and how they have prepared you for life at UChicago.

Seek feedback on your application

Before submitting your SSEN application, seek feedback from teachers, mentors, advisors and family members. Show them what you have written and ask for their help and suggestions. These people know you well and can provide valuable insights to help you strengthen your application.

Have a back-up plan

While the SSEN is a fantastic opportunity, it’s essential to have a backup plan if you aren’t successful. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket: apply to other schools and consider their early decision options to ensure you have options should any one of them fail. Prepare your regular (i.e. not early-decision) applications in case the SSEN does not come through.

Conclusion

The University of Chicago's Summer Student Early Notification (SSEN) program is an exciting new option for high school students who want to demonstrate their commitment to UChicago. By offering a sped-up admissions timeline, the SSEN program rewards students' dedication, helping them plan their futures with more certainty. If you’re passionate about UChicago and have participated or planning to take part in its summer programs, consider applying to SSEN to give yourself an edge in the admissions process.
