Changes to the ACT test coming in 2025: what you need to know

Big news for those preparing for the ACT! Starting in 2025, the ACT will undergo significant changes designed to make the test more flexible and aligned with what students learn in high school. Here’s everything you need to know about what’s coming:

What are the changes?

1. Optional Science section

In a move similar to the optional ACT essay, the Science section of the ACT will become optional. This change allows students to tailor the exam to better suit their strengths and post-secondary plans.

2. Streamlined Reading and English sections

Both the Reading and English sections of the ACT will be more concise. The total number of questions will be reduced by 44, making these sections shorter and more focused. While the exact length of reading passages has not been specified, they will be shorter, allowing for a more straightforward test-taking experience.

3. Shorter test duration and more time per question

The overall length of the ACT will be reduced from three hours to two hours. This reduction not only makes the test less daunting but also provides students with more time per question, helping them to showcase their abilities without feeling rushed and making the testing experience more manageable.

4. Flexible test format options in the US

In the US, students will still have the option to take the ACT either online or with paper and pencil. While the announcement does not specify the format for international students, it is presumed that they will continue to take the test at a test-centre computer.

Implementation timeline

These changes will be implemented starting with National online testing in spring 2025 and then for school-day testing in spring 2026. This phased approach ensures that all students have the opportunity to benefit from these enhancements.

Why these changes?

The goal of these changes is to make the ACT more relevant and manageable for students. By reducing the test duration and allowing students to focus on their strengths, the ACT aims to provide a better measure of a student's readiness for college and career.

These changes should help students perform at their best by reducing test fatigue and allowing them to concentrate on showcasing their true potential.
