UPenn is the latest to reinstate standardised testing requirements for 2025-26 cycle
The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) has announced that it will reinstate standardised testing requirements for undergraduate admissions, beginning with the 2025-2026 application cycle. This decision aligns UPenn with other prestigious institutions, including Harvard, Caltech, Brown, MIT and many other Tier 1 universities which have also reintroduced the SAT and ACT as mandatory components of the application process last year.
A shift back to standardised testing
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many universities, including UPenn, adopted test-optional policies to accommodate students facing challenges in accessing testing centers. However, with increasing research on the role of standardised testing in predicting academic success and ensuring fairness in admissions, top institutions are reconsidering their policies.
Harvard cited extensive internal research showing that test scores offer valuable insight into students’ potential, particularly when viewed in the context of their backgrounds and educational opportunities. Meanwhile, Caltech, known for its highly quantitative programs, determined that standardised tests provide essential information about students’ readiness for its challenging curriculum.
According to UPenn’s announcement, the return to requiring standardised tests is aimed at providing a clearer, more holistic view of applicants' academic abilities. The university emphasised that standardised scores, when considered alongside other application materials, help assess students’ preparedness for rigorous academic programs.
What this means for applicants
For students aiming to apply to UPenn, this change means they must plan ahead and prepare for standardised testing. While many applicants have already been submitting SAT and ACT scores under the previous test-optional policy, future applicants will need to ensure they meet the university’s specific testing requirements.
This shift highlights the importance of structured test preparation. At A-List Education, we have seen firsthand the significant impact that focused preparation can have on students’ test performance and always encourage students to submit their test score. With our tailored SAT and ACT programs, students have achieved remarkable score improvements, enhancing their competitiveness in the admissions process.
