Yale becomes latest Ivy to reinstate SAT/ACT testing requirement

1 Minute Read

Yale University, a prestigious Ivy League institution, has announced its decision to reinstate its testing requirement for the 2024/2025 admissions cycle.

After implementing a Test Optional policy in 2020 due to the challenges posed by the COVID19 pandemic, Yale has observed that over 80% of successful applicants still chose to submit strong SAT/ACT scores. This reaffirms the importance of standardised testing in the admissions process, prompting Yale to officially reintroduce the requirement. Following in the footsteps of Dartmouth College, Yale is now the second Ivy League university to make SAT/ACT scores mandatory for applicants.

Yale distinguishes itself by offering enhanced testing flexibility compared to Dartmouth. While Dartmouth, MIT, and Georgia Tech mandate SAT or ACT scores, Yale allows applicants to submit IB or Advanced Placement scores. It is crucial to note that IB scores must be obtained before application submission to be considered. This means that while gap year students can opt for their official IB scores in lieu of SAT/ACT tests, Year 13 applicants must take the SAT or ACT. Yale terms this approach as "Test Flexible."

Top scores on the SAT or ACT are crucial for Ivy League or Tier 1 university admissions, with the bar set at 1550 or 34 respectively. Achieving these scores demands precision, mastery of grammar rules, mathematical prowess, and advanced reading techniques.
